Dental Electives Abroad
Tailored Placements Across Asia & Africa
In many developing countries, access to oral healthcare is limited, and dental conditions often go untreated. Many patients opt for tooth extractions rather than restorative treatments due to lack of awareness and resources. Through Elective Abroad’s Dental Program, you will have the opportunity to work alongside experienced local dentists, assisting with preventive, restorative, and emergency procedures in low-resource clinics and hospitals across Africa and Asia.
Whether you are a pre-dental student, dental student, or dental assistant, this program will help you develop essential clinical skills, enhance cultural awareness, and build confidence in patient care. You’ll receive mentorship and support, with encouragement to be proactive, ask questions, and participate in procedures not always available in high-resource settings.
We urge participants to make the most of this unique opportunity, as a few weeks abroad can provide a transformative learning experience that shapes you into a more skilled and compassionate dental professional.

✔️ Oral Health Assessment & Patient Care – Learn to take patient histories, assess oral health conditions, and assist with diagnosis and treatment planning.
✔️ Hands-On Dental Procedures – Under supervision, you may assist with:
-
Tooth extractions & minor surgical procedures

Scaling, polishing & prophylactic cleanings

Dental restorations (fillings) for cavities
-
Fluoride treatments & sealants for cavity prevention
-
Denture fittings & adjustments

Basic orthodontic procedures & impressions
-

✔️ Adapting to Low-Resource Settings – Learn how limited access to modern dental equipment affects treatment approaches, and how dentists in resource-poor areas innovate with available materials.
✔️ Exposure to a Wide Range of Conditions – Encounter dental cases that are rare or more advanced than in high-resource settings, such as:
-
Severe dental caries & untreated decay
-
Advanced periodontal disease (gum infections & tooth mobility)
-
Oral abscesses & facial swelling due to infections
-
Maxillofacial trauma from road traffic accidents & falls
-
Oral cancer & pre-cancerous lesions (leukoplakia & erythroplakia)
-
Fluorosis & enamel hypoplasia due to water contamination
-
Cleft lip & palate cases requiring surgical intervention
✔️ Cultural & Ethical Awareness – Learn how sociocultural beliefs, economic factors, and lack of access to preventive care affect oral health in developing countries.
✔️ Community & Public Health Engagement – Get involved in school-based dental screenings, oral hygiene education programs, and fluoride treatment initiatives.
During your dental elective abroad in Africa and Asia, you will gain hands-on experience managing a wide range of dental and oral health conditions that are often more advanced than those seen in high-resource settings. Working in low-resource hospitals, dental clinics, and community outreach programs, you will develop clinical skills, adaptability, and a deeper understanding of global dental healthcare challenges.
Oral & Dental Infections
✔️ Advanced Dental Caries & Tooth Decay – Many patients have untreated cavities due to a lack of preventative dental care and fluoride access.
✔️ Periodontal Disease (Gum Disease) – Severe gingivitis and periodontitis are widespread due to poor oral hygiene education.
✔️ Oral Abscesses & Severe Infections – Untreated dental infections can lead to cellulitis, Ludwig’s angina, and systemic infections.
✔️ Tooth Extractions & Severe Decay – Many patients require extractions rather than fillings or root canals due to late-stage decay and infection.
Oral & Maxillofacial Trauma
✔️ Fractured & Avulsed Teeth – Often due to road traffic accidents, falls, and contact sports injuries.
✔️ Jaw Fractures & Maxillofacial Trauma – Limited access to oral and maxillofacial surgeons means fractures are often untreated or managed non-surgically.
✔️ Burns & Soft Tissue Trauma – Facial burns and injuries, especially in children, due to open-fire cooking and unsafe home environments.
Pediatric & Preventative Dentistry
✔️ Early Childhood Caries (ECC) – Common due to high sugar diets, poor oral hygiene, and lack of parental awareness.
✔️ Malocclusion & Orthodontic Issues – Many patients have untreated dental alignment issues due to a lack of orthodontic care.
✔️ Cleft Lip & Palate Cases – Unrepaired cleft lips and palates due to limited access to surgical intervention.
Oral Cancer & Pre-Cancerous Lesions
✔️ Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma (OSCC) – Strongly linked to tobacco and betel nut chewing, with many cases diagnosed at late stages.
✔️ Leukoplakia & Erythroplakia – Common in high-risk patients, requiring early detection and biopsy.
✔️ Osteonecrosis & Severe Bone Loss – Seen in patients with chronic infections, poor oral hygiene, or post-radiotherapy cases.
Community & Public Health Dentistry
✔️ Oral Hygiene & Preventative Care Education – Many patients have little to no access to regular dental care, making public health initiatives essential.
✔️ Fluorosis & Water Contamination Issues – Excess fluoride or lack of fluoride in drinking water leads to dental fluorosis or increased cavities.
✔️ School-Based Dental Screenings & Education – Many programs focus on early intervention and preventative care for children.
